Varieties for white wines
Aurelius
Origin: (Neuburger x Rhine Riesling). Not extended in a bigger range yet – it takes only a part of 0,35 % in the entire vineyard area in the Czech Republic, but its proportion rises.

Chardonnay
Origin: A traditional variety grown in Moravia and Bohemia. It covers about 3,4 % of vineyards in the Czech Republic and tends to increase. Recently, it has belonged to the most fashionable varieties both in the Czech Republic and in the world.

Müller Thurgau (Riesling x Silvaner, Rivaner)
Původ: The variety was created by Professor H. Müller from the Swiss canton Thurgau in 1882. It is mentioned as the cross-bred vine of Rhine Riesling and Green Silvaner. The later expert knowledge has proven this variety to be created by crossing Rhine Riesling with Madeleine Royal. More than sixty years ago, this variety begun to be grown in some locations whereby it is the second widespread variety in the Czech Republic. It covers 13,9 % of the vineyards in the Czech Republic and the trend shows its significant reduction.

Pálava
Origin: (Roter Traminer x Müller-Thurgau). It was created in the 1950s. Its portion in the entire vineyard area in the Czech Republic amounts to 0,7 %.

White Ruländer (Pinot Blanc)
Origin: This variety came into being as a bud mutant clone of Pinot Gris grape. It has been grown in Alsace since the 14th century. Its Czech name, Rulandské bílé, has resulted from the appellation of Grauer Burgunder in Germany. The Czech name “Rulandské” is used for the whole group of Burgundian varieties and it has become a world rarity. In the Governmental Variety Sheet, this variety was entered as Burgundské bílé (Weißburgunder) between 1941 and 1993; since 1993, it bears the name Rulandské bílé (White Ruländer). Within the area of the today’s Czech Republic, this variety covers 5,1 % of the vineyard areas and tends to held this portion despite the high competition from Chardonnay.

Grey Ruländer (Pinot Gris)
Origin: It is a bud mutant clone of Pinot Noir grape. It was created probably in Burgundy and from here, it spread to all the France, especially to Champagne. This variety came together with Pinot Noir to Bohemia as early as in the 14th century. Nowadays, it is grown on 2,0 % of the vineyards; recently, a soft increase of this portion has been obvious.

Rhine Riesling
Origin: It has not been cleared yet. This variety is anticipated to be created by free crossing of Heunisch with Traminer round about the upper Rhine River. To all worldwide wine-growing regions, it was spread from Germany where it covers almost 22 % of the entire vineyard areas. In the 17th century, Rhine Riesling was spread by Dominician within the territory of the present Czech Republic. In 2002, Rhine Riesling covered 6,5 % of the entire vineyard area in the Czech Republic and it tends to a soft increase.

Welschriesling
Origin: The origin is not explicit. Despite the name, it is not related to Rhine Riesling grapes. In Moravia, it was planted about 1900 first, now it covers 10,4 % of the entire vineyard area with the trend to reduction. It is the third most-frequently grown variety in the Czech Republic.

Sauvignon Blanc
Origin: Its origin is not known exactly, it originates probably from France. Recently, the wine lands with this variety have exploded; it begins to be planted even in the countries where it has not been in a bigger range grown until now – e.g. in Germany. In the Czech Republic, it has been planted since the beginning of the 1950s. At present, it covers 3,5 % of the vineyards and tends to increase its portion.

Veltlínské červené rané (Frühroter Veltliner, Babotraube, Rote Malvasier, Korai Pirosveltelini)
Origin: It is not explicit. It was created by a random pollination of Green Silvaner with the Roter Veltliner´s pollen. To the Czech Republic, the variety was spread from Lower Austria. Nowadays, it reaches 2,2 % of the vineyard areas in the Czech Republic.

Varieties for red wines
André
Origin: (Blaufränkisch (Lemberger) x St. Laurent). The variety was created in Velké Pavlovice in 1961. It was named after CH. K. André (1763 – 1831), who founded the first world Association for Fruit Cultivation in the town of Brno. Thus, he supported the interest to get new varieties by crossbreeding. Nowadays, this variety covers 1,8 % of the vineyard area in the Czech Republic.

Cabernet Moravia
Origin: (Cabernet Franc x Zweigelt). A new variety increasing very quickly, it covers 0,7% of the vineyard area in the Czech Republic now.
Wine: Harmonious wine with charming taste, deep colour with fine Cabernet aroma. It reaches excellent quality.

Lemberger (Frankovka, Blaufränkisch, Kékfrankos)
Origin: It is not explicit, the variety originates probably from Lower Austria or Croatia. The Heunisch variety was one of its ancestors. The portion of this variety in the entire Czech Republic’s vineyard area amounts to 5,9 %. It is the second-frequent black variety in Moravia.

Neronet
Origin: (/St. Laurent x Blauer Portugieser/ x Alibernet).It was cultivated by Professor V. Kraus in Lednice (Moravia) in 1965. In the Czech Republic, it is seldom grown (only 0,2 % of the entire vineyard areas).

Blue Ruländer (Pinot noir, Pinot nero, Blauer Burgunder, Spätburgunder, Kisburgundi)
Origin: This variety originates from Burgundy where it was probably created during the Roman Period by spontaneous crossbreeding of Pinot Meunier (Schwarzriesling) and Traminer. The existence of this variety was documented in Rhineland as early as in the 7th century and round around the Lake of Constance in the 9th century. Karl IV. let the variety bring to Bohemia in the 14th century. In Bohemia, it covered 90 % of vineyards later. Pinot Noir was the base for Pinot Gris, whereby Pinot Blanc was produced as a mutation of Pinot Gris. Nowadays, Pinot Noir is grown on 2,5 % of the vineyards areas and tends to increase its portion slowly.

St. Laurent
Origin: According to the genetic analysis, this variety originates from “Burgundian” varieties. It comes from the region of today’s France from where it was spread to Germany in the mid-19th century. In the Czech Republic, it was planted after 1900, about 1935, it covered approx. 1 % of the vineyard areas here. Nowadays, it is grown on about 9 % of the entire vineyard areas. St. Laurent is the most-frequented black variety and the fourth most frequented generally. The worldwide largest areas of this variety are located just in the Czech Republic.

Zweigelt
Origin: (St. Laurent x Lemberger). The variety was cultivated in Klosterneuburg in 1922. In the second half of the 1960s, it was brought to Moravia. Today, it covers 3,7 % of the vineyard areas in the Czech Republic.
